While all the Czarface joint projects have been successful — Tony Starks, anybody? —  it's the propulsive, endearingly absurd escapades they took up with DOOM on their previous LP where it felt like Czarface really hit its stride. Seemingly everyone from Dua Lipa to The Weeknd has taken either direct or indirect inspiration from the neo-disco, hip-hop, R\u0026amp;B, 90’s house blended cocktail of this album. The sound has become so ubiquitous recently that it can be easy to forget just how startling and fresh this album sounded when it first dropped. Equally startling is how fresh it sounds still and how it has avoided becoming a victim of its own influence. This album works as a time capsule and a breath of fresh air and covers more sonic ground in its hour-long running time than a lot of producers get in their entire careers. You have down-tempo instrumental hip-hop with assists from Kariem Riggins, there’s anthemic indie-dance with Little Dragon and an enduring club-banger with assists from Anderson .Paak long before he was driving around in Cadillacs with Bruno Mars. As opposed to the introversion and intimacy of so many albums to have come out in the past year and half, \u003cem\u003ePrivate Space\u003c\/em\u003e instead feels like a breakout, or maybe a party, which is fitting considering the lengthy list of credits. Where Jones' first couple albums were firmly entrenched in 60's nostalgia, the third effort feels significantly more neon 70's, like it would slot in somewhere between Earth, Wind \u0026amp; Fire and some of George Clinton's tamer compositions. From their scrappy, early material you can watch them refine their craft and smooth off any rough edges before creating their first masterpieces. \u003ci\u003eThe Reprise Albums (1968-1971)\u003c\/i\u003e, a collection compiling the first four studio albums from the inimitable Joni Mitchell offers such an experience. The hippie-folk of her debut \u003ci\u003eSong to a Seagull,\u003c\/i\u003e benefits from a new mix from Mitchell who famously complained David Crosby’s original mix for the LP sounded like “it was recorded under a Jello bowl.” Her songwriting further blossoms on 1969’s \u003ci\u003eClouds\u003c\/i\u003e and 1970’s \u003ci\u003eLadies of the Canyon,\u003c\/i\u003e with now-classic tracks like “Chelsea Morning”, “Both Sides, Now”, “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock” taking center stage. This is all leading, of course, to her magnum opus \u003ci\u003eBlue \u003c\/i\u003e(1971). In her liner notes for the box set Brandi Carlile calls \u003ci\u003eBlue \u003c\/i\u003e“the greatest album ever made,” and it’s hard to make a case against her. Joni's intricate songwriting and brutally honest lyrics set her apart from the other Laurel Canyon songwriters and made for something that is truly timeless.
