On a surface level you can point out some bands that could work as reference points for Big Thief – the laid-back melancholy of mid-70s Neil Young, the more complex approach to guitar-based indie rock songwriting of bands like Grizzly Bear, the all-for-one camaraderie of The Band – but none of these really capture all of the factors at play that make Big Thief into one of the best bands in Indie rock at this moment. Adrianne Lenker’s hypnotic lyricism is accompanied beautifully by Buck Meek’s reserved guitar lines and the restrained until they’re not rhythm section of Max Oleartchik and James Krivchenia. Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You keeps the group's quiet intensity intact while moving into an even earthier direction than their earlier work. True to its cover, this is music that would sound great sung together by a group of friends around a campfire but would sound just as good on your own with only a pair of headphones to keep you company.
