Curtis Amy’s Katanga! Is a velvety smooth west coast jazz album originally released in 1963 that acts as a vehicle for Amy’s laid-back horn tones and the nocturnal guitar of Ray Crawford. The mood of the album can be found summed up in Amy’s composition “Lonely Woman” (not to be confused with the Ornette Coleman standard of the same name) uses a gentle, cymbal-backed rhythm to act as a canvas for Amy and Crawford’s duelling sections as they blend their instruments to make for an album that is calm but not afraid to let loose.
