On Valentine, Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan takes the vulnerable, wounded songwriting of 2018’s Lush that landed her at the forefront of Indie stardom and gives it the grand, mainstage arrangements befitting of the level of adulation she’s reached in her young career. While Lush took cues from 90’s stalwarts like Pavement, Helium and Sebadoh, Valentine shows shades of current day indie-adjacent pop sounds from the likes of Mitski, Boygenius and Lorde. This updated sound shows her range as a songwriter and how far she can stretch her sound while maintaining the same bedroom-confessionalism that’s made her so endearing in the first place.
