Lenker is the engine of Big Thief's introspective, tender, ever-chugging motor, so it makes sense that the second solo offering follows suit. While she had no intention of following up her 2018 solo debut Abysskiss, the impromptu cancellation of Big Thief's 2020 European tour led her to a one-room cabin shared by her sister, then, inevitably, to her guitar and notebook, making this very much a #pandemicalbum. And there is a pervading feeling of insulation, even by Lenker's standards. This feels as intimate as Big Thief's quietest moments, like secrets meant only for you, the listener. They aren't, obviously. But you can believe that if you'd like. She makes it very easy.
