Made over a week in Havana with an assembled group of Havana-nightlife veterans in a studio left virtually unchanged since the beginnings of an American embargo decades before, Buena Vista Social Club re-introduced the sounds of Cuba to the rest of the world. Though the majority of the musicians were well past the age typical to bourgeoning stardom (more at the age where you would began watching Matlock reruns and eating dinner at 4 PM), their age did not slow them down a hair while putting together the Buena Vista Social Club. This record, remastered and reissued in a 25th Anniversary box set that includes 2 LPS and 2 CDs, outtakes and alternate takes — as well a 40-page book documenting the club’s history — packs decades worth of energy, perfection and craft in their most ecstatic form.
