After collaborating on a few previous westerns, composer Ennio Morricone and director Sergio Leone decided to work a bit differently on The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Before filming had begun Morricone composed it’s theme, which has now become one of the most whistled pieces of music ever made, and the movie took its cues from the music. Despite being rightfully regarded as one of the best westerns of all time, the music may arguably overshadow the rest as the most iconic part of the movie. The music here has transcended just being a movie theme and became as ubiquitous of a cultural touchstone as showdowns at high noon or Clint Eastwood always gritting his teeth when he talks.
