Is there a better energy to combat S.A.D. and post-holiday blues than (literally anything by) Fela Kuti? Aphrodisiac, to its credit, is like all other albums by the Grand Poobah of Afrobeat — lengthy, boisterous, rollicking, funky, deliriously joyful. Before it was re-recorded as an album proper in London, these four tracks were initially disseminated as Nigerian 45s Eventually, after being compiled and fuelling countless get-downs, Afrodisiac found its way into the hands of David Byrne of the Talking Heads, where it was a became a chief influence in his interest in world music, as well as an early-working model of how he envisioned their classic, Remain In Light (1980).
