Before Fucked Up was writing complex concept albums centred around the origins of life, lost love amongst lightbulb factory workers, or the existential crises that can occur after quitting said lightbulb factory they were a scrappy and effortlessly brilliant hardcore band from Toronto. They wrote, true to this releases’ title, quick, energetic punk anthems that showed a healthy understanding of the lineage of the genre all while keeping their runtimes rarely over three minutes. Tracks like “Police” and “Baiting the Public I” still hit with the same aggression they had when they were first written nearly two decades ago and would have sounded at home in nearly any North American cities hardcore scene two decades before.
