After taking a look at some of the heavy topics of our time on their first three albums – masculinity, racism, economic disillusionment – Idles takes an inward turn on Crawler, with frontman and chief lyricist Joe Talbot drawing from his past struggles with addiction for the album’s lyrics. The music reflects this inward look, by underlying Talbot’s lyrics with layered synths and a nearly ambient glow to these songs. While there are still plenty of moments on this album that will be sure to open up circle pits around the world as one of music’s most imminent festival bands returns to a re-opened touring landscape but Crawler finds Idles embracing more dynamics than ever before in the most-forward thinking album of their career.
