The latest installment in Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s Jazz is Dead remix series follows the legendary vocalist Jean Carne, who had a five octave vocal range and enough charisma and magnetism to justify a remix series of her own. Everyone from Nas to Brand Nubian to Madlib have sampled her vocals at some point in their careers, and it’s not hard to see why. Carne’s vocals blend seamlessly into these beats and acts like another instrument in the mix, showing another function of her incredible voice.
