After setting the reissue world alight last year with Wamono A to Z Volumes 1 through 3, the reissue series carries on into the new year with Wamono Groove, the latest release in the series that answers the question: what if The Meters were from Japan? Recorded in 1976 by Japanese instrumentalists Kiyoshi Yamaya, Toshiko Yonekawa and Kifu Mitsuhashi, this album adds in traditional Japanese instruments like the koto and the shakuhachi to create the kind of east meets west crossover found on things like Rupa’s Disco Jazz, while also creating bright, funky soundscapes that would sound right at home in the City Pop craze that was to follow in the years ahead.
