Even at his most melancholy — which Sentimental Fool certainly is – there is an inextricable joie de vivre about Lee Fields. His first album on Daptone Records finds the 71 year old at his most down bad, but never without a knowing wink and nod. Even as he sings of being abandoned, alienated and heartbroken, it rarely feels truly down — not to say the emotion isn't genuine, as there's only a handful of vocalists alive who can match the expressiveness in his voice. It's more that the natural charisma embedded in his vocal chords is so visceral and overwhelming that if overshadows any sorrow. Sad though these songs may be, they won't make you feel the same. They'll just make you happy to be able to listen to one of the all time greats on an unprecedented run.
