While the internet and algorithms have rendered distinctions between genres and the divide between the mainstream and underground moribund at this point, it’s hard to overstate how tough of a balancing act New Order was. Their hybrid of synthpop and post-punk with bits from goth and punk thrown in made them fit in on the Top 40 as much as they did a John Peel mix and endeared themselves to everyone from Wedding DJs to turntablists at the Hacienda. If you’re wondering why they’re so undeniable you just have to give a spin to 1983’’s Power, Corruption & Lies which shows the group at the peak of their powers with tracks like “Age of Consent” and “Ultraviolence” proving just as capable of filling a dancefloor as they were nearly 40 years ago.
