The Miami based Scone Cash Players have been working together as a group since their 2018 debut album Blast Furnace. Led by Hammond organist Adam Scone, their new project Brooklyn to Brooklin is their first release on the Daptone label. Compared to their earlier albums, more funk inspired, Brooklyn represents a turn in style towards something more ambitious and personal. The title of the album recalls Scone’s history in two corners of the world, Brooklyn having been his musical home for years, and Brooklin (the neighborhood in Sao Paulo, Brazil) the place where his wife grew up, touring and performing there many times. Such a collision of sensibilities lends itself well to this album, which sounds like a mashup of the Menahan Street Band with Jorge Ben’s samba. Equal parts soulful and psychedelic, Scone does a fine job proving that the organ can still be a great time, and isn’t something you only hear on Sundays.
