There are a few options available to a musician upon reaching middle age, you can fall back on your old sound from your younger years and hope that you can continue to recreate it without sounding like you’ve lost a step, you can allow your sound to “mature” which usually just means you use less drums. Or you can do what Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead fame have done and link up with a hotshot drummer like Tom Skinner of Sons of Kemet and make music that is more feral and energetic than what you were doing in your 20s. This is Radiohead’s Grinderman and a brilliant way to navigate a midlife crisis without even once stepping foot on a motorcycle.
