The tagline to Eccentric Deep Soul, the latest in Numero Group’s always excellent Eccentric Series, says this is “the only divorce record you’ll ever need to own.” Without disrespecting Marvin Gaye’s Here My Dear, Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks, or most National albums, it would be hard for us to disagree. This release showcases heartbreak anthems from under-appreciated soul singers of the 1960s and 70s and displays a penchant for melodrama and feeling that could compete with tracks from any decade since that have been blared out of anguished lovers' speaker systems.
