from Light In The Attic

3x12"

Light in the Attic has been on a roll recently with its reissues of slick city-pop in the Pacific Breeze series or funk and groove music in the Wamono A to Z (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2releases. The authoritative reissue label has also dipped its toe into the calm pools of what is known in the west as ‘ambient music’ (‘environmental music’ in Japan) with Kankyō Ongaku, which is finally back in circulation after an out-of-print period following its original release in 2019.

This three LP set is curated by Visible Cloaks’ Spencer Dorian and collects minimal, soothing ambient music from Japan in the 1980’s, including some essential tracks from legends such as Yellow Magic Orchestra, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Yasuaki Shimizu and some more esoteric artists of the era as well. The arrangements here are minimal and textured, with most tracks performed with only one or two instruments; synthesizers are ever-present, but acoustic instruments and bits of gentle percussion also pop up, all while maintaining an enduring mood of calm throughout the set's 25 tracks. The music here is both engaging enough to be listened to actively but is also able to blend into the background while you cook, clean, work or read the weekly Blackbyrd newsletter.
