The follow-up to 2019’s excellent Titanic Rising, And in Darkness, Hearts Aglow acts as a sequel of sorts to the previous Natalie Mering (who performs under the names Weyes Blood) record. This album moves into much of the same musical territory as its predecessor. There are plenty of Laurel Canyon flourishes here that could be found on Titanic Rising like the reverb-drenched drums, psychedelic organ flourishes and Mering’s vocals – which are reminiscent of a more mellow Joni Mitchell – but with drum machines and ambient soundscapes thrown in for good measure. This album builds on this previous sound and refines it further and delves deeper into her unique form of forward-thinking revivalism, it’s the most Weyes Blood album yet.
