Following a particularly brutal bout of writer’s block Nika Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus, stepped away from her usual solitary approach to writing and recording and seeked out collaborators like Sunn O))) producer Randall Dunn and journeyman studio drummer Matt Chamberlain to add some extra hands into the creative process. The result is a dark, spare release that keeps the neon-magic of her early material in place while moving into a shadowy, stripped-back zone that keeps the listeners focused on her crushing vocals and intense songwriting.
