Dezron Douglas' major breakout was Force Majeure, the sublimely captured live-recordings streamed in collaboration with harpist Brandee Younger. But before that his big breakout was his bass spot on Makaya McCraven's Universal Beings (a shop favourite). And long before that he broke out sharpening his teeth backing the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane etc. Point being that Douglas is a veteran of more than one jazz scene, and ATALYA, the latest release from the best label in music, is the work of a maestro steadily blending the free and mellow worlds he previously simultaneously occupies.
