Dash Shaw's Cryptozoo follows a 'cryptozookeeper' as she attempts to ensnare a Baku, the supernatural nightmare-eater of Japanese mythology, and the subsequent moral conundrum of whether to display it at the cryptozoo for which she works. If this sounds surreal, dreamlike and altogether confusing, it's because it is. And so is John Carroll Kirby's soundtrack, which drifts between moods like a dream of its own, free flowing between new-age to ambient, classical to something resembling soul.
