Performing a tribute album to a beloved classic on the level of Miles Davis's Bitches Brew is ultimately a fool's errand, you’re never going to top the original and will end up doomed by comparison. London Brew – the new release consisting of a murderer’s row of the best and brightest of London’s thriving jazz scene including Nubya Garcia and members of Sons of Kemet – sidesteps this by making something that takes inspiration from its source material but goes off in its own direction. There isn’t a ton of resemblance here to the original album but rather something made with the same philosophy as Miles Davis’s best work: follow your instincts and make something new.
