Out of the three melancholic indie-rockers that make up Boygenius (the other two of course being Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers) Lucy Dacus is the one that has taken the most from classic rock. 2018’s Historian was definitely more confessional than the next indie-rock album, but Dacus’s focus on the electric guitar made for a listen that is just as indebted to 70’s FM radio staples as Dacus’s own diary entries. On Home Video, Dacus retreats further into her confessionals, with atmospheric arrangements giving her lyrics and storytelling a platform to shine. The lyrics on this album draw heavily from Dacus’ strict Christian upbringing in Richmond, Virginia, and her memories and reflections of that time. The brutal honesty of her storytelling make for an affecting listen somewhere between youthful nostalgia and glad-those-days-are-gone.
