Released to minimal sales and even less fanfare two years before his tragic death in 1974, Nick Drake’s Pink Moon has taken on an enormous legacy in the wake of its creators demise. Clocking in at a scant 28 minutes and consisting only of Drake’s voice and acoustic guitar save an overdubbed piano solo on the title track, this is an album that’s spare in every sense of the word. The overwhelming fragility of Drake’s voice combined with his delicate but technically dazzling guitar work has moved Drake into the same canon populated by the likes of Big Star or the Velvet Underground. Under served, influential and brilliant artists who never received their due in their time but would still be essential listening five decades on from its release.
