Released in conjunction with Blood Money, the pair of companion albums to soundtrack Waits' collaborative avant-garde theatre productions with director/playwright Robert Wilson. Alice the play focuses on Lewis Carroll and his muse, Alice Lidell, the primary inspiration behind Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Naturally, to capture the sound of a warped underground world ruled by an idiosyncratic logic, there's few more qualified than Tom Waits and wife/songwriting partner Kathleen Brennan. And in the weird and wondrously wacky world of Waits, Alice is, all things being relative, a gentle, sweet album. Besides the song about Edward Mordrake, that is.
